Features that Make Your Home “Uniquely You”

When you build a home with a custom builder there are plenty of options to make it uniquely you, from one-of-a-kind features that a home builder like Stanley Homes can create during construction to “do-it-yourself” projects. Andrea Lacourt of Stanley Homes shares a few inspirations from homeowners who crafted a vision into a statement about their personal style.

“Homeowners love to enjoy the Florida weather so upgrading the outside is very popular,” Andrea said. “From fancy pools, gas lanterns and fire bowls to fire pits and full size cabanas and tiki bars.” If the homeowners don’t want to be inside for entertaining they also have the new option of upgrading to a mist away system which keeps pests away so everybody can enjoy the party.

Homeowners are also opting for keeping kids’ play areas under a screen enclosure. “This is great for the younger ones as you can lay the astro turf grass for half of the patio and then add a nice playhouse and be protected.”

Gina Petrucelli is one homeowner who has completed her own projects in her family’s home, built by Stanley Homes.

“For the backyard area, we knew we had limited space and did not want to waste any of it,” Gina explained. “Our goal was to make it so that the kids and adults could enjoy it equally. We found a picture of a structure that we knew could be used as a kid’s clubhouse as well as a relaxing area for adults. A talented carpenter came in and built exactly what we had in mind. The kids hang out in there to play, read, and have snacks. Our pool has a stone water feature, so we just continued that stone idea over to create a walkway to reach the pool bathroom as well as the wood structure.”

Another way homeowners are making their homes unique are paint colors and painting techniques. Gina’s children’s rooms each have an accent wall, one being a zebra print pattern and the other a geometrical design with a lot of color. “The kids told us what their ideas were, we did a little planning and got them done just how the kids imagined them to be,” Gina said.

Don’ forget about your ceilings either. Ceilings are like a fifth wall that can be a unique focal point as well. Options include crown molding, painting the ceiling color a shade slightly different from the wall for dimension, using a faux finish, wood planks, or wall paper for added design. “These paint ideas are very popular in our trey ceilings which can also be unique in itself,”
Andrea explained.

Bathroom upgrades are also common with homeowners. “Who doesn’t like going to the spa? Or relaxing in the steam room? One of our homeowners wanted to create a spa feel in his shower with 12 nozzle body sprayer system and a rain head shower. Some homeowners take that upgrade one step further and tile up and over the ceiling bringing the glass all the way up to create a steam shower,” Andrea said.

“A popular upgrade is a standalone tub, also known as a claw foot tub,” Andrea said. “This is a unique decorative piece as well as very functional.”
